The Mother by Florian Zeller is a psychological drama that revolves around the complex and intense emotions of a mother, whose life has been upended by the perceived behaviour of her husband and grown-up son. Suspecting her husband of having an affair and feeling neglected by her son, Anne struggles with her increasing isolation and jealousy.
Zeller’s clever play focuses on The Mother’s fragile psyche as she tries to navigate the emotional turmoil caused by her family’s disintegration. The Mother has a deep yearning for connection, but her relationships are fraught with misunderstanding and emotional distance. As she becomes more desperate for attention the audience is left questioning what is real and what is imagined, mirroring the protagonist’s struggle to maintain her grip on reality.
Having performed in Next Stage’s highly-acclaimed production of Florian Zeller’s The Father in 2023, Tiana James is delighted to be making her directorial debut with Next Stage Theatre Company with this companion piece.
